El Día de Muertos in México is an ancestral tradition recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

To help preserve this important tradition, Xcaret presents the Festival of Life and Death Traditions every year, a celebration filled with aromas, colors, and flavors.

From October 30 to November 2, the festival showcases the culture and rituals of the Maya world. In addition, one of Mexico’s 32 states is invited to share its culture and traditions. This year, the guest of honor will be the state of Quintana Roo.

Visitors will also learn more about the commemoration of Hanal Pixán, or “food for the souls,” a time when the spirits of loved ones who have departed the earthly world are granted special permission to return for a few days. They are welcomed by their families with altars adorned with candles, photographs, flowers, and offerings of delicious dishes from the gastronomy of the Yucatán Peninsula.

In addition to enjoying traditional food, the festival offers a variety of artistic expressions such as theater, music, dance, exhibitions, and workshops. This year’s edition will also feature digital events.

For children, there is a special area at the Interactive Hacienda with plenty of activities designed for them to have fun while learning about this tradition.

So, if you are in the Mexican Caribbean, come celebrate life and honor the memory of those who have departed at Xcaret.
